Do you update? Grrr....
I've got a whine (or rather, a bitch or a rant, call it how you like) for you.

Why, why do readers have to whine and bitch to authors about updating? Sure, there are plenty of fics out there that have just 'died' (and no one wants to see that happen), but when an author explicity states that RL has taken over, thus causing a delay, why the continued need for whiny comments such as 'when r u gonna update?'

Not to mention the very tone of the comment. I got that *points*. Not once, but twice. Seriously. After I had stated both on lj and ff.net that I was going to be busy the month of June and not to expect much, if anything. (I got that comment at both places, btw.)

Would a reader seriously expect a reply to that? Not only is it just an annoying whine, it's also atrociously written. I'm more likely to respond to a comment that uses proper words and manners. Would it be so hard for someone to polietly ask, "Any idea when you'll be updating next?"

Whining about my update schedule is less likely to motivate me than not. Why are some readers seemingly incapable of realizing that most authors have lives outside of fandoms and fic writing? *shakes head*

***edit 7/9/07***

Another one! Jesus christ! Another helpful "Update soon!" posted anyomously. How about you give a comment worth something, hmm? God forbid you give an actual useful review or some such. Because those are *so* not the kind of comments writers want to receive... ::sarcastic::

Another Wonderful BTVS Site Is Leaving Us
It is with great sadness that I pass along this news to you:
Richess, the wonderful lady who has, for so many years, brought us One Good Lay, one of the most thorough Buffy/Spike sites on the web, has become too busy with her choice of career to continue maintenance of such an extensive site. I cannot tell you what a shame this is. I have always referred Buffy/Spike fans to her site as the most comprehensive, well-organized site for that fanfiction.

Here is the URL: http://www.firepretty.com/onegoodlay/ if you want to go and quick save some of your favorite Buffy/Spike fics to your hard drive for posterity!

Okay, so...I post this icon to a community that is basically...defunct. FIRST MISTAKE. I didn't realize the community was defunct because I have been getting posts from it whenever a new fic is posted by one of my friends, which is why I joined in the first place. This community basically takes all things related to this fandom.

Vampires SUCK! (Icon Stealers Strike Again!)
Received the following IMPORTANT BULLETIN from aphelant in buffy_icons:

Icon theft...
It has come to my (aphelant's) attention that certain members at Xanga have been posting other people's icons without credit.

One site is here and another is here. If any of these are your icons, or if you recognize any as someone's else's, please let myself (aphelant), velvetwhip, the icon maker, and even the perpetrator know.

Thanks in advance!

Extreme Changes in Characters
Since this is my first rant here, I'll make it short. And I guess this is the only one I have at the moment.

I hate when people write a fanfiction and change a character too much. I'm alright with AUs and a bit of OOC stuff, but I feel that there can be limits.

For example, I was reading a Ron/Hermione fanfiction the other day, and the author changed Hermione so much it disturbed me. I won't put the link up out of respect for the author, but I will describe what happened. The author made Hermione change her hair and start shopping at Hot Topic and such for a 'new look'. Now, I'm alright with people changing their hair, and I shop at Hot Topic, but how likely would you see Hermione there? Hermione's character was also changed COMPLETELY, to the point where she seems slutty.

Again, I'm fine with a few small changes. But when people change a character's personality so much, they might as well call the character an OC instead of their name from a specific fandom.

This is just my opinion though, and I guess plenty of people can like this. It just bothers me a lot though.

Shameless plugs:

vold_e_mart: Potter Sues now have a shop.

udunoutfitters: For all your Tolkien Sues.

I'm just waiting for the Pirates of the Carribean shop to get opened up in time for the second movie.

If this has been posted before ... sorry.

Though, after joining this community, I had never seen it before. And I saw it linked in someone's reply.

GRAAH! asjakjhghf
And this is why I hate 90% of the ff.net population as a whole. The bloody Mary-Sues, or more specifically, the people who write them. OK, so they provided a source of amusement for a while, but that was until I wrote a rather harsh review for this piece of shit fanfiction. So I was extremely hard on the OC's at first, since they realy aren't QUITE as Sueish as others I've seen...But after being called a 'dumbass' and 'idiot' by several people, I gave it a more objective look and tried to offer some helpful criticism. Big mistake on my part. Instead of actually taking it to heart, the authoress and her thick-headed reviewers continued to jump down my throat, throwing childish insults at me and generally defending their precious writer...Once a flamer, always a flamer it seems.

So, maybe it's just me, or has every writer and reviewer taken out a 'If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all' policy with stories, particularly ones that contain OCs? Perhaps I deserved a mild stomping on, but this is just ridiculous. People need to take harsh words and yes, even flames, with some class. (And harassing someone via author's notes? Psh. Please, deal with it a little more gracefully than that, will you?)

I don't write fanfiction, but I do like to read it, quite a bit... am I the only person who gets annoyed when genuinely good authors get all "I'll only post the next chapter up if I get five reviews" on fics? I know somebody further down the page mentioned something a little similar, but... it's annoying when there's a really good fic and you do review wanting to genuinely see more, but if you're the only person or there still aren't enough reviews, you'll be left on the edge of your seat about the fanfic and won't get to see the end!

I don't understand how people can abandon fics they've spent time on just purely because they haven't had enough reviews...

Okay. I just found this community. Surprisingly, I found it while trying to redirect someone else to a proper community where they could make an angsty post. (If you want to see it, I'll provide it, but for now I'll keep the "no advertising" rule in mind.)

Let me start off with a Link.

And then for a little positive note, something happened to me in a chat room in which we were doing turn-based role-playing, recreating the Meiji period of Japan. Entitled "Japanese Snow Forest."

Sn87932 has entered the room.
Sn87932: Hey,
Sn87932: konichiwa
Sn87932: watakushi wa sn89732 desu
Host: Oh, watakushi wa dork ass desu.
Sn87932 has been suspended from the chat room.

People need to stop nitpicking everything and just learn to either enjoy or ignore things. Because all the nitpicking over translations and originality and canon errors and all that jazz is annoying to those of us who just want to have fun without the nitpickers breathing down our necks constantly.

Stop telling the authors what pairings to write and not to write. It's THEIR fic.

LotR Stupidity
WHY do people write about something they have no idea about? Hmm? Okay, I can understand a short vignette inspired by the movie, particularly if the plot-bunny just won't leave. But if you really want epics, READ THE BLOODY BOOKS! You cannot write a story involving elven marriage customs when YOU DON'T KNOW THEM. I sympathize with not wanting to dig through the Silmarillion and all of the other published material to write a wedding, but they could just look for a beta reader to help.

And there is NO EXCUSE for a story that completely rapes any of the races. Elves do not have arranged marriage, for goodness' sake! Elven marriages are for eternity--bad idea to arrange them. That's the whole point: elves were given the gift of eternity. They die, they go to Mandos' Halls and eventually get reincarnated AS THE SAME PEOPLE. Worse yet, when stupid fangirls arrange marriages to Elrond--who ALREADY HAS A WIFE!

I'd do plenty more ranting on the topic, but I'd probably start getting technical and annoying. I can do that in my own LJ.

*sighs* When the bad guys go good...
Hello, I'm new, and there hasn't been a post here in a while so I decided to post. ^_^

fanfics like this make me sad. I hate to pick on the author of this, because it's obvious they are very young, but it disturbs me nonetheless and this is really one of the clearest-cut examples of what I'm talking about.

And that is, simply, what happens when the bad guys go good. I'm not talking about villains taking a redemptive journey, I'm talking about the misrepresentation of villains that takes them and makes them the heroes.

In this case, the villain is Yuber. Not a bad looking character (which is why I suspect many people try to make him into a touchy-feely good guy; it doesn't seem like the non-bishies have this problem nearly so badly), but definitely not a nice guy. If you've played any of the Suikoden games (in particular, Suikoden 3), you know Yuber's primary interests are death, blood, destruction, and killing. He may or may not be the embodiment of Chaos itself. The whole reason he joins any side in a war is because that side will spill more blood. He shows no personal attachment to any characters; he willingly deserts his "allies" not once, not twice, but three times. Definitely not a nice guy. At all.

And yet, a lot of fanfiction I've seen in the Suikoden fandom makes him, if not a good guy, then at least a human one, who is deeply in love (usually with Albert, though I've seen a few with Luc and one or two with Pesmerga, and all three usually have personality facelifts to the point where they are completely unrecognizable.) and selfless, willing to do anything to protect his lover, and, in other words, drastically OOC. Yuber is *not* a good guy, Yuber is *not* selfless and willing to die for his lover OR his morals, and this is illustrated several times in three different games. *sigh*
